Heating Experts Say Old Furnaces Have to Go

The easiest way to determine if your furnace has gone past its limit and needs to be replaced soon is when repairs have become more frequent. There are instances, however, when only some components have to be replaced. By inspecting your furnace’s key components, heating experts can tell whether or not it should remain in service.

Evaluate your current system

Have your furnace inspected by a trained professional from businesses that specialise in furnace repair and installation. As mentioned earlier, if certain key parts continue to malfunction and the furnace has been in use for more than 18 years, it would be more practical to replace it.

Maintenance tips

Ensure the filter is clean and replace it if necessary: A clogged filter will reduce airflow and force your system to work harder and use up more energy. See to it that the filter is replaced monthly. Nobody wants dust particles circulating in your ducts.

Inspect your furnace’s electrical assemblies: Loose wiring or a malfunctioning thermostat could be the cause of inconsistent temperatures. Thermostats that run on batteries should have fresh ones. Confirm that all fuses are working and that the fan is operating properly.

Carbon monoxide detectors for safety: If you have a gas or oil furnace, then you should install carbon-monoxide detectors on each floor and near the garage. Make it a point to vacuum them at least once a month to clear the sensors of dust. These should be replaced every five years.
